• Heat pump installations rose by 46%, with 38,305 units installed in the year ending September 2024.

The UK’s heat pump installations rose by 46% over 12 months, with Wales leading the way

The UK is seeing a surge in heat pump installations, with new government data showing strong growth in the past year. 38,305 heat pumps were installed through government schemes in the 12 months ending September 2024. That marks an incredibly encouraging 46% increase from the previous year. The increase is part of a wider trend—installations have more than quadrupled since 2019. The clean heat transition is well underway.

Two key government programs fuel this rapid growth: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Energy Company Obligation. These initiatives have played a vital role in supporting the switch to low-carbon heating, with 49% and 46% of installations attributable to each scheme respectively. Notably, 98% of the heat pumps installed were Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs). That’s a rise from 87% just five years ago, indicating that ASHPs are becoming the preferred choice.

Regionally, Wales is leading the charge

The country saw the largest share of installations, accounting for 18% of the total—an impressive leap from just 6% in 2019. The South West and South East are also seeing significant growth, with 14% and 12% of installations. Meanwhile, London and the North East had the smallest shares, each with just 3%.

While these figures reflect government-backed installations, they don’t capture the full picture. The data excludes heat pumps in new-build homes and those supported by other regional schemes. Including these installations would boost the number quite significantly. However, the public appetite for clean heating and money-saving is clear. It’s a clear sign that the UK is embracing a more sustainable future, with green heating solutions becoming more accessible and cheaper to operate than ever before.
