UK government extends Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding amidst massive sustainable heating growth

The UK government is boosting its commitment to low-carbon heating with an extra £25 million for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). This increase brings the total budget for 2024-2025 to £205 million. The additional funds will help more households access grants, making it easier and cheaper for homeowners to switch to cleaner heating systems.

The government has also authorised Ofgem to over-allocate vouchers, raising the total to £280 million. This ensures there will be enough funding available for households throughout the year. The move comes at a time of rising demand for heat pumps in the UK.

In 2024, sales of heat pumps soared by 63%, with nearly 100,000 units sold.

The most significant growth was seen in air-to-water Monobloc heat pumps and other categories like Domestic Hot Water Heat Pumps. This growth marks a major shift towards more sustainable energy solutions in the UK, and doubtless spurred the additional investment.

Alongside this, training for heat pump technicians is also on the rise. In 2024, 9,062 people completed training qualifications, up by 15% from the previous year. This increase is essential as the UK government targets 600,000 heat pump installations annually by 2028.

With growing demand for clean energy solutions, the UK is on track to see heat pumps in 10% of UK households by 2030. The government’s funding and policies are crucial to making this vision a reality.
