MCS Foundation successfully advocates for an extension of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to boost heat pump adoption
The MCS Foundation has successfully advocated for an extension of the UK Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Launched in May 2022, the BUS supports homeowners in replacing gas boilers with heat pumps. Originally set to run until 2025 with £450 million in funding, the scheme will now receive an additional £1.5 billion and be extended until 2028.

Thanks to these efforts, homeowners can continue to receive £7,500 grants for installing air-source or ground-source heat pumps. The initiative is instrumental to the government’s target of installing 600,000 heat pumps annually by 2028.
MCS Foundation is pushing for further improvements.
They want the grant for Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) to increase from £7,500 to between £9,000 and £10,000. This adjustment would significantly bolster the GSHP industry in the UK.
In addition, the MCS Foundation is urging the government to actively promote the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Raising awareness of its benefits is crucial for driving the transition away from expensive, unsustainable heating.
