• The UK reached a record 42,000 certified heat pump installations by September 2024, surpassing last year’s total.
  • Financial incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) and Home Energy Scotland Grant are driving adoption nationwide.
  • Heat pumps are helping the UK achieve its climate goals, increasing energy efficiency and reducing consumer costs.

The UK breaks its heat pump installation record with over 42,000 installations so far this year

According to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), over 42,000 certified heat pumps were installed by the end of September. This number already surpasses the total for 2023, when 40,426 heat pumps were installed.

Installations have increased by 39% compared to last year. As a result, the total number of certified heat pumps in the UK has reached nearly 260,000. This growth highlights the rising interest in low-carbon heating solutions.

Government schemes have played a key role. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers homeowners and small businesses in England and Wales a £7,500 grant for MCS-certified heat pump installations. Applications to BUS surged in 2024, with double the number received in August compared to the previous year. In Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland (HES) Grant provides similar support, with grants of up to £7,500 and £9,000 for rural households.

As more consumers turn to heat pumps, the UK moves closer to its climate goals. With the right support and infrastructure in place, the future of heating in the UK looks bright. Transitioning to renewable energy sources will not only help the environment but also lead to significant savings for consumers.
